Quick answer
Using the widely cited Pew Research Center boundary, people born from 1981 through 1996 are Millennials, while people born from 1997 onward belong to the following generation, commonly called Gen Z. The Library of Congress research guide presents the commonly used Gen Z range as 1997–2012. Generation boundaries are analytical conventions, not universal legal or scientific classifications.

The 1996/1997 cutoff
Pew explains that generational cutoff points are not an exact science. They are tools for comparing people who experienced similar historical, technological and social conditions at comparable stages of life.

What does “Zillennial” mean?
“Zillennial” is an informal overlap label sometimes used by people born near the Millennial–Gen Z boundary. It is not a standardized research category, and different writers use different year ranges. Someone born in 1995, 1996, 1997 or 1998 may relate to experiences associated with both groups, even when a chart assigns one generation label.
Your birth-year classification is a convenient research label. It does not determine your personality, values, habits or identity.
Why do some websites use different dates?
- There is no single government authority that defines every generation after the Baby Boom.
- Researchers may choose boundaries that fit the historical event or population they are studying.
- Popular culture often adopts names and ranges before researchers settle on a working definition.
- A one- or two-year difference does not make one source automatically wrong; the source should explain its method.
This page uses the Pew 1981–1996 Millennial endpoint and the Library of Congress guide's 1997–2012 Gen Z range for a clear, consistent answer.
