Generation labels describe broad social groups, not exact scientific categories. Researchers and publishers may place a boundary one or two years earlier or later. This calculator uses a non-overlapping working chart: Baby Boomers 1946–1964, Gen X 1965–1980, Millennials 1981–1996, Gen Z 1997–2012 and Gen Alpha from 2013.
People born close to a boundary may identify with characteristics of both neighboring generations. These informal overlap groups are sometimes called “Xennials” or “Zillennials.” For a focused explanation of the 1996/1997 boundary, use the Millennial or Gen Z checker.
The Gen Z–Gen Alpha boundary is less settled. Some sources begin Generation Alpha in 2010, creating an overlap with the commonly cited 1997–2012 Gen Z range. Compare both systems in the Gen Z or Gen Alpha checker.
